ČSSM je součástí ESSM.
U zrodu organizace stáli 3 význační vědci. Václav Michal – cévní chirurg z Prahy (tehdy ČSSR), Adrian Zorgniotti (USA) a Gorm Wagner (Dánsko). V r. 1978 založili pracovní skupinu zabývající se impotencí - International Conferences on Corpus Cavernosum Revascularization
In New York, USA, the First Annual Meeting under the name of International Conferences on Corpus Cavernosum Revascularization was organized by the founders Vaclav Michal (Czechoslovakia), Adrian Zorgniotti (U.S.A.) and Gorm Wagner (Denmark). Major hosts: Adrian Zorgniotti and Giuseppe Rossi
Jean François Ginestié, MD, from Montpellier (France), had published a book called “Radiological Exploration of Impotence” with A. Romieu, MD, as coauthor. In this book, they described a series of arteriograms of penile vasculature that met the standards of modern arteriography. In a time when collimators were not available, they used sandbags to produce excellent and accurate images of the arterial supply of the penis. (Jean François Ginestié, MD suddenly died in January 1979).
Michal mentioned that Ginestié was the first to carry out a selective arteriography of the arterial bed supplying the cavernous bodies and to show some forms of narrowing and occlusion of these arteries. His most valuable contribution in this particular area is the detection and correct interpretations of malformations and dysplasia of the arteries of the penis, which explains some cases of primary impotenc
2. International Symposium on Corpus Cavernosum Revascularization se konalo 1980 v Miláně a třetí 1982 v Kodani
V Paříži 19–22.6.1984 pod vedením Ronalda Viraga, jenž publikoval první článek o užití intrakavernosních injekcí a vyvinul i unikátní revaskularizační postupy se udál „The First World Meeting on Impotence Research“, druhý pak 1986 v Praze, dále v Bostonu a Rio de Janeiru a pak dalších městech každé 2 roky. Václav Michal byl předsedou této organizace v letech 1978-1986. V r. 2000 na konferenci v Perthu/Australie došlo ke změně názvu na International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (ISSIR), překlenovací název na cestě k nové společnosti. 2 roky poté, na konferenci v Montrealu byl přijat název tak, jak jej známe dnes: International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM). Poté vznikly samostetné společnosti dle kontinentů, kdy se ČESKÁ SPOLEČNOST PRO SEXUÁLNÍ MEDICÍNU stala součástí té evropské-European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM).
